April Food Day

Not everyone will be able to have a breakfast like this on their table.

Do you know that, not only is today April Food Day but...
· One in eight Americans are at risk for hunger?
· Four million Americans receive assistance from Feeding America each week?
· Children who are hungry have slower emotional, social and educational development?
· Millions of elderly Americans go to bed hungry every night?

Please help fight hunger by supporting either your local food bank, or Feeding America, a national food bank with 200 members across the United States. Click here or here to find out more and/or make a donation.

Thank you my friends, for reaching out to our friends in need with your donations.

Joyce thank you for bringing this up. Now that our economy is in turmoil this is a great idea. I will take something to our Food Bank on April 1. PS Got rescheduled to fly out of Anchorage on Friday, April 3.... thanks always for your kind words, they mean a lot my friend... I will return on April 18 to Alaska (if the volcano permits!!) Had a dental appt today. My dentist was unable to fly from Seattle to Anchorage for 2 days due to ash in the air....xoxo

Hi Joyce,

Your post made me think of this quote:

"God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say "thank you?"

the place where i workout had a food drive last month, always give to people and animals.....what jane said is so terrible....why can't that food be given to shelters?! (i know it is more complicated than that) i was at a conference a couple weeks ago and there was way too much food....i asked what they did with it.....shrugged their shoulders and said throw away.....then you drive along and see someone standing with a sign that says hungry, will work for food....sad...thanks j for this post.

It's so good that there are people who try to make others aware of the extent of people who go hungry. Hunger affects all of humanity.

Great post, verse and reminder. Thank you.

Hubby and I were just talking about ways to head off the entitlement bug that kids seem to get... This would be a good way.

Have a good day!

Kim, it is sad to see so much food thrown away. Many moons ago my first job at 16 yrs old I worked for a fast food restaurant. Even as a 16 yr old this broke my heart. I tried to save the food from the trash, asking many nights I worked to please can't we give to a shelter, soup kitchen just some where to feed someone hungry. The manager(s) response always the same for legal purposes they couldn't fear of getting sued. Hmmm... now days they seem to get sued for alot more things than feeding someone hungry.

I still ask when I see so much food being wasted at places, same respond as above. Thank goodness Panera Breads have opened their arms and hearts for giving out the end of the day bread. It is a shame the other restaurants haven't followed suit on this wonderful idea.

Thanks everyone for your warm comments. This touches my heart. xoxo

Good reminder and post. To me waste is a sin.

I deliver food prepared by a team at our church to a soup kitchen every month.
For many years it was homeless men waiting on line...these days it is families.

I also think that we should consider the elderly living among us. Are they getting enough food? Your neighbor may be suffering in silence and too proud to ask for assistence or is unawate of services they are entitled to.

I always worry about the vulnerable- animals elderly, and children.

Thanks for reminding me to not just worry-act.

Wonderful post. I think if we all spent some time at a food bank or soup kitchen, we would eat each meal in a whole different light. Thanks for bringing attention to this.

What a caring post. I makes me so sad to think of all the hunger going on. I think of how greatful we are when I make such a great amount of food all of the time. I try to donate as much as I can. It is an endless task, so sad. Thank-you.
XOXO

I am so warmed to see all of the April Food Day posts among my bloggy favorites (Me, who apparently lives under a rock, knew nothing about it. :-) I could get on a soap box and never get off on this topic...touching upon factory farming and how poorer kids are more at risk for health issues than ever before because of the garbage that passes for food anymore...GRRR!

Lovely post, as always. Thanks for helping to spread the word on this super important topic.
