For The Love Of Baking and Cooking

Deb over at Lifescapes (stop over to see her favorites on yesterday's post) asked if I would like to participate in her cookbook collections. I thought it would be fun to share a small piece of my collection of books and online favorites.

My little room was originally a closet that we turned into small office and became the perfect place to hold my cookbook and recipes.

Under the desk as you can see are more entertaining and cookbooks along with some other books. Also some loose change in case I burn a dinner or dessert.

I have 4 file drawers of recipes. I really need to go through these files and do some spring cleaning.

The love of baking and cooking has been a big part of my life as far back as I can remember especially for family gatherings. Growing up I didn't have no desire to be in the kitchen, I was more the participate in the eating department. My very first cookbook was Betty Crocker and by the note my mom wrote you can only image the disasters I created in the kitchen.

I didn't step in the kitchen until I lived on my own, more for survial than pleasure. The enjoyment didn't come until later on in life.

Some of my favorite recipes are from my mom’s worn wooden recipe book

with her handwriting inside.

Here are just the tip of some of my many favorite books and blogs.

Betty Crocker (because it was my first and does have some good recipes), The Farmer's Daughter Cookbook (a friend's mother wrote this book years ago, while owning a restaurant in IL) and this jam and jelly book by Christine Feber (I hope someday to take a class with her).

Gale Gand's chocolate and vanilla book is another favorite of mine. I have had the pleasure meeting and seeing her on different occasions. She is so... nice. My first encounter was a few years ago I was having a tamale making partying with a kitchen full of girlfriends coming over. I was “in the weeds” as they say in the restaurant kitchens (meaning I took on more than I could chew). Not only were the tamales happening (never made these on my own) in the kitchen I was trying out new recipes for the party. One was Gale’s Mexican hot chocolate fondue. I was able to get her email and she responded immediately and bailed me out.

If you are ever in the Chicago area she is executive pastry chef and co-owner of TRU restaurant and has a wonderful coffee bar in Wheeling, called Gale's Coffee Bar.

Some of my favorite food blogs I visit often are pastry chefs, Marilyn with simmer till done, Helen with tartelette and Aran at cannelle et vanille. I have not had the chance to meet them, but they have a wealth of information and are so giving with sharing their love of pastries. When I'm in a crunch or don't understand something they eagerly give me guidence as a friend would do. Visiting their blogs are worth the visit just to look at their photos.

My cupcakes and muffins have come along ways from when I first stated baking, just ask my family.

Enjoy your day and make it a golden one!

What a great post! My first cookbook was also given to me- Good Housekeeping Cookbook from 1963. I still love reading the recipes- it´s almost like a history lesson- and still haven´t found a better banana bread recipe. And your little room- I want one!

Oh how lovely. Cooking is such a great thing, we love it in this house too.
Oh and those cupcakes...yummm...xx

You are SO organized!
I also started cooking for my own survival. Now I love experimenting, but I don't enjoy the daily chore of cooking for my family's survival!
PS I tried sending you an email @yahoo.com about drying herbs, but it came back with a "permanent failure" error ...

What a special little nook. And what a collection of books. Thanks for joining the fun Joyce. You have a nice space in which to ponder "what's for dinner". The bookcase, where I keep my cookbooks is also a converted closet-in my dining-room.

A very clever use of space indeed!! And isn't it funny how we can learn to have a passion for something...yours started once you were living on your own and you turned something we "must" do (eat) into an art form. Brava!

What a great post! I love cooking also, always have. I'm going to do a post on this myself one day. All my recipes and books are all over the place. Bookshelves, kitchen, drawers, by the computer, down in Maryland...I'm trying to write a cookbook, and my notes are all over the place. I'm going to try getting more organized this summer.
What a great book from your mom. That is so special! Have a great weekend!
XOXO

Cookbooks...sigh! One of my first cookbooks was The Frugal Gourmet by Jeff Smith who was on PBS with a cooking show of the same title. Way before cable TV! Joyce, I need you to come help me sort and file my loose recipes. Looks like you have it down pat! Then we can bake something delicious!

This is such a lovely post. I just adore that cozy space, with all the delicious words, food and memories it holds. Thanks for letting me be a part of it!

What a wonderful treasure you have in your room. Such a cozy cove.
I have my cookbooks all over the house. (in the kitchen, in the office, in some of the bedrooms). R and I bake. I am just not that good at cooking. Our first Valentine's Day as a married couple, I remember I came home from Wheeling and I wanted to make a special dinner. I made what has now become a joke instead of Lemon Chicken I made PUCKER Chicken. (I was a bit too aggressive with the lemon). Oh well live and learn.

Love Ina Garten and her Barefoot Contessa books.

I love that you have a whole nook dedicated to your cookbooks and recipes. I love it! Your organizing is inspirational. No wonder you are such a fabulous cook!

I have just a baby collection of cookbooks compared to yours, but I do a lot of clipping out of Cooking Light, Southern Living etc. I compile them in a binder with page protectors. I use that cookbook religiously.

Oh, wow! You put my tiny collection of cookbooks and scribbled recipes to shame! Love that you have files and how cool that you have all those recipes in your mothers handwriting!

Oh, we have to get you some Moosewood (veggie) books to add to your collection! :-)

I can't tell you how much I love your mom's wood book...how sweet! My mom can NOT cook...she knows this...to the point where it's a running joke at family events. "Look at that cake? Did Helen bake it? HAHAHAHAHA!" Nor did her mom. So I definitely don't have any family recipes passed down...other than, "pick up phone, dial, order one large pizza." :-) That said, I loooovvvveee to bake and am a decent cook. Go figure

I share your love of baking. Just one of the best ways to spend the day, in my opinion. And I see you are a fan of Ina Garten as well. Aren't her cookbooks wonderful? You might also like Baking by Dorie Greenspan if you don't have it. I have really enjoyed that one!!
